Dear students,
It looks like we have wrapped up another year in our educational lives and are headed into summer. For those of you that will be attending summer school, please make sure you attend your classes and take it seriously. You’ve already wasted and opportunity for those credits during the school year so don’t make the same mistake again. For those of you that have avoided summer school, have a good summer and try not to forget too much before your return in August.
Whether you are a student, teacher, or any other adult I’d like to give you a little plan to get the most out of summer.
Here are three things I try to do on my days off (summer) so I feel good about myself, and the way I spend my time.
#1 Do something for yourself physically.
Find a way to get some exercise everyday. It is really easy to sit around on days off and watch TV, read a book, browse the internet, or play video games. All of these things have a place in your life, but none of them really burn calories. Depending on your fitness level and your affinity for sweat you can decide just how hard you exercise. Personally, I do not care much for running but pick-up basketball involves running and I love it. I’ll also get exercise this summer playing golf. By ditching the cart and walking my round I’ll basically travel 5-6 miles with a 30 pound backpack on taking somewhere between 80 and 90 swings in between. exercise can be as simple as riding your bike, or walking to run your errands, and doesn;t need to feel like training for the Olympics.
#2 Do something for yourself productively.
We all have things that need to get done. Many of us are procrastinators. I believe that if I can check one thing off of my list per day I usually feel good about it by night-time. You need to fill out a college application, do it. Tomorrow you can wash your car. The next day you can reorganize your closet and donate your old clothes to the Salvation Army. Adults probably have more things on their list than you kids out there, but if you try to do something productive each day you’ll find some good uses for your time.
#3 Do something for yourself emotionally/socially.
Whether it is school, or work we all want to have fun on our days off. Do something fun everyday. Relax on your patio with a book for a few hours. Take your significant other out to a movie. Go swimming, go shopping, or go hang out with a friend. If you make a plan to do something fun each day you’ll look back on your summer and feel like you did a lot. Also, this is a bonus if your fun thing is also a productive/excercise thing.
If you do each of these everyday you’ll be very pleased with your break. You’ll feel good about yourself because you got exercise, you’ll feel good about yourself because you wont have you lists of tasks hanging over your head, and you’ll feel good about yourself because you will have rewarded yourself fun.
I have one other piece of advice that you probably won’t like, but I am convinced that it will make your break feel longer. Get out of bed in the morning. The more hours you are awake during your break the longer it will seem. You should sleep in a little bit compared to the school year for the sake of rest. Get up at 8:00 instead of 6:00 so you can sleep in but still have lots of time in your day to accomplish your three things.
I’ll miss you guys this summer, but check if you check in on this blog throughout the break I’ll still be here giving some advice.
Sincerely,
Mr. Reader
